AKNVAS is a newer brand for suits, but I really like this burgundy double-breasted pantsuit.

According to the brand’s website, it was founded by Danish designer Christian Juul Nielsen. As they note:

The collection focuses on thoughtful, well-designed, and innovative daywear for discerning and dynamic women. Designed to move seamlessly from desk to dinner, with a focus on drape, flattering silhouettes, innovative knits and an elevated palette.

Nice! The pieces are available in sizes 0-12, and both pieces together are around $1200 for a suit.

I always have a soft spot in my heart for blazers with this puff sleeve detail because it was so, so popular when I started the blog… back in 2008. They disappeared within a year or two, and it was really interesting because while I didn’t think I had been wearing “trendy” suits to work, I soon realized that yes, in fact, that was what they were.

So I’m fascinated that it’s swinging back around and now puff sleeves are starting to come back! Readers, what are your thoughts? If you do like the look, this flannel grey suit looks gorgeous.

The brand notes that the pockets are functional, the “deep cuffs” can be turned back for a more relaxed finish, and, in fact, the pouf at the top of the shoulder is “perfectly position to create a narrower shoulder.”

The blazer is $545, and the pants are $425, at Me+Em. (Ooh: they have a ton of wool flannel pieces, which can be hard to find.)

It’s velvet suit season, and I’m excited! Even though velvet suits generally have a really limited purpose (the holiday season), they’re always gorgeous and luxe. (Perhaps the fact that this one is blue instead of red or green, you can extend the wearing into spring? Discuss….)

Because you’ll probably only wear them a few months of each year, though, the cut should be as classic as possible — just like this pants suit from Reiss. I love the dark but bright shade of blue, as well as the tone-on-tone styling. Also with regard to the styling, I’m always a fan of the rockstar scarf-worn-loose look with suit jackets, and I think it’s clever to do it with an untied secretary blouse/pussybow blouse — but the ties at the wrists are confusing.

In any event, the suit is gorgeous. The blazer is $540, available in sizes 0-14 (pre-ordered but many sizes sold out?!) and the pants are $330.

Looking for something more affordable? I noticed that both J.Crew Factory and Loft have some velvet suits in green and black. If you just want an affordable black velvet blazer, this Eliza J one has been around for years — readers especially like it because it’s easy to wear with dresses.

Ferragamo is doing some really interesting things with asymmetric blazers, but there’s some horrible styling out there. Saks has the model (!) in pants that are too tight. NET-A-PORTER showcases the suit the way Ferragamo did on the runway, with a shorts suit to end all shorts suits. (It may be the craziest shorts suit I’ve ever seen, and that’s saying a lot.)

This version in micro houndstooth shows what’s great about it, though — it feels like a really classic suit, but with an offset row of buttons (mostly hidden) so there’s just the slightest asymmetric detail. I love the effect in general.

You can find the houndstooth version at Ferragamo and Neiman Marcus for about $5000 for both pieces (not counting the matching overcoat). There’s a plain gray version at Saks, NET-A-PORTER, Neiman Marcus, and Ferragamo for about the same price. NET-A-PORTER also has a similar cropped asymmetric blazer, although I’d skip the miniskirt for work.

We’ve mentioned Altuzarra’s basic suiting before, I’m sure, but something about this one caught my eye. The Fenice blazer is sharp and beautiful as always — I feel like it’s such a classic.

The pants (and the boots they’re styled with here) are interesting. Saks describes the pants as “high-rise, straight-leg silhouette with a slight flare,” but to me they look like they have a very small crop as well. The fact that they’re styled with big chunky boots with a 2″ platform is… an interesting choice.
